Shumeng's Biography
| My name is Shumeng Jia. I am now pursuing my PhD in Biological and Biomedical Engineering at McGill University under the supervision of Dr. Natalie Reznikov. Before starting my journey with the Reznikov Lab, I used to be an electrical and control system engineer, but now I'm working as a "cyber-naturalist" with my coding skills. My research focuses on the quality optimization on both resolution scale and volume scale of 3D computed tomography images using deep learning tools. I scan avian eggs from natural history museum collections and from breeders, as well as ancient Egyptian animal mummies from the World Cultures collection of the Redpath Museum. While working across disciplines, I believe that insights and advice from multiple fields are essential for meeting the demands of different research topics and for developing user-friendly technology. I have continually open-sourced my research algorithms and actively served as a consultant and presenter for image analysis workshops at summer schools and annual meetings of the Microscopy Society of Canada. This year I am deeply honored to be the recipient of the inaugural Misa Hayashida Memorial Scholarship and to have learned about Dr. Hayashida’s contributions through the award process. Receiving this scholarship facilitated my international travel from Montreal to Fukuoka, allowing me to present my recent published work in person at the joint symposium. The diverse imaging modalities and expertise of participants at the conference have inspired and enriched my research. I am also honoured to contribute to the special issue dedicated to Dr. Misa Hayashida—a microscopist who appreciated beauty in nature, and whose legacy continues to inspire | ![]() |
